“Even though the fig trees have no blossoms, and there are no grapes on the vine; even though the olive crop fails, and the fields lie empty and barren; even though the flocks die in the fields, and the cattle barns are empty, yet I will rejoice in the Lord! I will be joyful in the God of my salvation.” Habakkuk 3:17-18
With an economy that is still affecting so many people financially, it can be difficult to find joy in many circumstances. This passage from Habakkuk reminds me that God is good all of the time, even through barren resources, failed attempts and loss of positions. Our salvation alone is reason to find joy and strength. No matter how much we lose in the physical world, we will always have our salvation to cling to.
We sang a great old hymn this past weekend at my church that I can’t seem to get out of my mind this morning.
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross the emblem of sufferin’ and shame
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners were slain
So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it some day for a crown
Now, I don’t know about you, but that is pretty amazing news. That exchange is one I can find joy in no matter what my circumstances may be. Even death can’t keep this joy from me. So for this week, even if our circumstances don’t allow us to buy the biggest and best turkey, or our loved ones can’t join us due to lack of means to travel, we can cling to that old rugged cross, and find our joy in Christ. A thankful heart is a wonderful gift to our Maker and a great way to show gratitude for all He has so freely given us. Happy Thanksgiving from SweeT-Shirt!!
